How Culverts Play an Important Part on Your Land
What is a culvert and why do you need one?
A culvert is a structure that allows water to flow under a road, railroad, trail, or similar obstruction from one side to the other. Culverts are commonly used both as cross-drains to relieve drainage of ditches at the roadside, and to pass water under a road at natural drainage and stream crossings.
Having a culvert under a roadway can make it easy for the property owner to cross a creek and get to the opposite side of the property.
How do you make a culvert on your land?
If you are installing a driveway culvert, check with your local building codes administrator for specific guidelines. In most instances, your municipality specifies that the tube must be a minimum length, usually 20 feet, to handle any fire emergency vehicles. The diameter of the tube depends on how much water it needs to handle, but 12 inch and 15 inch pipes are common. A skid-steer load with a backhoe attachment will make quick work of digging the trench for the project.
